People magazine named Noah Wyle its Sexiest Man Alive 2026 on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. The 55-year-old star of HBO Max's medical drama The Pitt said the news sounded like "a classic set-up for a prank", and it arrives weeks after he won a second straight Emmy for playing Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch.
Wyle takes over from Wicked star Jonathan Bailey, who held the title for 2025. This guide covers what Wyle said, how he got here, how People chooses its pick, past winners and what comes next. Facts are current as of October 27, 2026.
Who is People's Sexiest Man Alive 2026?
The 2026 title went to Noah Wyle, an actor best known for two hospital dramas made three decades apart: NBC's ER and HBO Max's The Pitt. Yahoo Entertainment reported that People revealed its choice on Tuesday morning in its own app rather than on a late-night talk show. That breaks with last year, when Bailey was unveiled on The Tonight Show on November 3, 2025.
Wyle gave his cover interview to People editor-in-chief Charlotte Triggs, according to ABC News. ABC added that photographer Jeff Lipsky shot him in Malibu in August. Gray News reported that his chocolate Labrador, Lily, appears in many of the photos. NBC's TODAY show also covered the reveal the same morning.
What Noah Wyle said
Wyle told People he did not believe the news at first. ABC News and Gray News both quote him saying that "not in a million years" did he expect the honor. Other highlights from the interview, as reported:
- On his wife, Sara Wells: he said she is "amused by it all," and that her approval was a big reason he said yes (ABC News).
- On the teasing ahead: "I am going to take a lot of ribbing from friends and family for sure," he said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly.
- On being himself in public: he said speaking without a script as himself is still the hardest kind of interaction for him, and that he would rather inhabit a character (EW).
- On what comes next: he joked that he hopes it is "just wine and roses, milk and honey from here on out" (EW).
He also described himself as a homebody. On days off he cooks breakfast for his wife and daughter, writes in a journal, works out and reads, Gray News reported. Wyle married Wells in June 2014; they have a daughter, Frances, 11. He also has two older children, Owen and Auden, from his first marriage to Tracy Warbin.
From ER to The Pitt: Wyle's career
Wyle was born in Hollywood in 1971. He found fame in 1994 as Dr. John Carter on ER, where his castmates included George Clooney. He stayed in the main cast until 2005 and returned for the 2009 series finale, according to his Wikipedia biography. Between the two hospital shows he led TNT's Falling Skies and played Flynn Carsen in The Librarian films and the Librarians series.
The ER role brought five straight supporting actor Emmy nominations from 1995 to 1999, but no win, as Collider noted. It also earned three Golden Globe nominations.
The Pitt premiered on January 9, 2025. Each episode covers one hour of a single shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Most filming happens on a Burbank, California, set modeled on Allegheny General Hospital, CBS News Pittsburgh reported. Wyle is also an executive producer and writer, and he directed the season 2 episode "12:00 P.M.," according to the show's Wikipedia entry.
The awards run
- September 2025: his first Emmy, for lead actor in a drama series, for season 1. The Pitt also won outstanding drama series.
- January 11, 2026: his first Golden Globe, for best actor in a TV drama, per the Golden Globes. His three earlier Globe nominations, from 1997 to 1999, were all for ER.
- September 14, 2026: a second straight lead actor Emmy, at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, for season 2. The Pitt also repeated as outstanding drama series, TVLine reported.
Clooney, himself a two-time Sexiest Man Alive, joked in January that if AARP ever ran a "Sexiest Man Still Alive" issue, Wyle would be his first nominee. Both ABC News and Yahoo recalled the remark on Tuesday.
Past Sexiest Man Alive winners
People has named a Sexiest Man Alive since 1985, when Mel Gibson took the first title. The five most recent winners before Wyle, as listed by NBC News and Yahoo:
- 2025: Jonathan Bailey, the first openly gay man to hold the title
- 2024: John Krasinski
- 2023: Patrick Dempsey
- 2022: Chris Evans
- 2021: Paul Rudd
Brad Pitt, George Clooney (1997 and 2006) and Johnny Depp have each won the title twice. Wikipedia's list of winners also counts Richard Gere: he shared a 1993 "Sexiest Couple" cover with Cindy Crawford, then won alone in 1999.
At 55, Wyle is one of the oldest men to receive the title. Only Sean Connery (59 in 1989), Patrick Dempsey (57 in 2023) and Harrison Ford (56 in 1998) were older when named, according to Yahoo and Wikipedia's list.
How People picks its winner
There is no public vote. A small group of People editors makes the choice, Yahoo Entertainment reported. Its recap cites past People staff describing how they track who stands out over the year, read reader comments, ask female celebrities for suggestions and sometimes use focus groups.
Secrecy is part of the process. In 2019, then-editor-in-chief Dan Wakeford told CNN that only about 10 staffers knew the winner before publication and that the story sat on a secret server, according to Yahoo's summary.
Readers do vote in the side categories. Before the reveal, People published its readers' poll, which drew more than 250,000 votes, ABC News reported. Stephen Colbert was named Sexiest Silver Fox, Travis Kelce Sexiest Cat Dad and Victor Alli Sexiest Period Drama Dreamboat.
What's next: the issue and The Pitt season 3
- The magazine: People VIP members can read the full issue in the People app two days before it reaches newsstands, EW reported. As of October 27, 2026, the reports above did not give the newsstand date.
- Season 3 premiere: Warner Bros. Discovery has said the show "will return for its third season in January 2027," Men's Journal reported. HBO Max had not set an exact date as of October 27, 2026.
- The likely pattern: seasons 1 and 2 both opened on a Thursday in early January (January 9, 2025, and January 8, 2026). A similar slot in 2027 is likely but not confirmed.
- Episodes: 15, released weekly, according to Men's Journal.
- The story: the season follows Dr. Robby's first shift back after a sabbatical of several months, Bleeding Cool reported. It is set on Thursday, November 12, 2026, the day after Veterans Day.
Wyle explained the timing to Deadline in July: "What we're depicting is Thursday, November 12, 2026, and it will be aired in January of 2027." To follow the story, watch People's site and app for the full interview, and HBO Max's official channels for the season 3 date.
Our take
Based on the reporting above, Wyle fits the profile People's editors have described: a man whose year stood out. In 2026 he won a Golden Globe in January and a second Emmy in September, and his show won the top drama Emmy for a second year in a row. Naming him while that run is fresh makes sense for a magazine that wants a cover readers already recognize.
The pick also continues a recent willingness to choose established stars over rising ones. Patrick Dempsey was 57 when named in 2023, and Wyle is 55. Reaction has been mixed, as it usually is: Yahoo gathered comments ranging from warm approval to fans asking about Bad Bunny. Because the title is an editors' choice and not a contest, that debate is part of the appeal. With season 3 due in January 2027, the timing works well for both People and HBO Max.
