When is Black Friday 2026 in South Africa?
South Africa follows the US calendar. Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving, which the US Office of Personnel Management lists as Thursday, 26 November 2026. That puts Black Friday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November.
It is not a public holiday here. The government's list of 2026 public holidays has none in November; the next one is the Day of Reconciliation on 16 December. Shops trade normally and most people are at work, which is one reason retailers now spread their deals across several weeks.
- Black Friday: Friday, 27 November (South Africa is on SAST, UTC+2)
- Black Friday weekend: Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November
- Cyber Monday: Monday, 30 November

Retailer sale dates announced so far
Only details that retailers have published themselves or confirmed to the press are included here. Expect many more announcements during November.
Takealot: Black November
Takealot told BusinessTech on 23 October that new Black Friday-priced deals would drop every week from 26 October to 23 November, with partner brands such as L'Oréal, Xiaomi and Canon running flash sales while stocks last. Chief marketing officer Karla Levick said "Black Friday on 27 November is still the main event, with exclusive deals landing that day from midnight."
The retailer's Black November page is live and includes a link to a separate Cyber Monday page. As Hypertext pointed out, Takealot has not put a date on its Cyber Monday deals, although the day itself falls on 30 November.
Amazon South Africa
Amazon.co.za's Early Black Friday Sale began on 21 October, with Prime members getting 24 hours of early access, Hypertext reported, citing Amazon's homepage and an email to customers. As of 27 October, Amazon had not announced dates for a main Black Friday event in South Africa.
Makro, Game and Builders
Massmart, which owns all three chains, said in a statement on 15 October that Makro and Game would reveal their Black Friday offers closer to the day. It later told MyBroadband that shoppers could expect "selected deals of up to 50% off" across the three brands, but it would not confirm specific products such as PlayStation 5 consoles. Briefly News reported that some Walmart-branded stores in South Africa will also take part.
HiFiCorp, Incredible and other Pepkor Lifestyle brands
Pepkor Lifestyle told MyBroadband on 19 October that it will run extended deals throughout November across all its brands. Those include HiFiCorp, Incredible, Boardmans, Bradlows, Russells and Sleep Master. It has not named any products yet.
Woolworths
Woolworths' own Black Friday 2026 shopping guide confirms the 27 November date and says specials usually run through November. It gives no start date for Woolworths' promotion and no trading hours, and it tells shoppers to check their local store's hours before setting out.
Checkers, Shoprite and Pick n Pay
We found no official 2026 Black Friday dates from Checkers, Shoprite or Pick n Pay as of 27 October. For reference, Checkers Sixty60 ran an online-only Early Black Friday promotion from 20 to 23 November 2025, according to IT News Africa, and set an all-time daily order record on Saturday, 22 November. Treat any 2026 dates for these chains as unconfirmed until they publish them.

How big is Black Friday in South Africa?
Bank data shows how much the weekend matters. Capitec said its clients spent R28.8 billion (about US$1.7 billion) over the 2025 Black Friday period, 14% more than in 2024, and that their online spending rose 43%, TechCentral reported. Standard Bank said its online sales grew 75% over the same period.
FNB expects the move online to continue. Marcel Jansen van Rensburg, FNB's credit card data science manager, told MyBroadband in September that online purchases should make up about 25% of Black Friday spending in 2026, and that digital wallet use should grow by more than 20% year on year. Massmart adds that Google search interest in Black Friday over the past three months was 30% higher than a year earlier.
The bigger story is online retail as a whole. World Wide Worx's Online Retail in South Africa 2026 study, released on 2 September with Mastercard and Peach Payments, estimates that South Africans spent about R130 billion online in 2025 (about US$7.8 billion). It forecasts about R159 billion (about US$9.6 billion) for 2026. Growth is slowing, from 35.4% in 2025 to an expected 22.5% this year, TechCentral noted. On one of the study's measures, online sales passed 10% of all retail during the November 2025 trading peak. Earlier editions of the study put the total at R42.3 billion in 2021, R55 billion in 2022, R71 billion in 2023 and R96 billion in 2024.
Dollar conversions use the European Central Bank reference rates for 26 October 2026, which work out at about R16.63 to the US dollar.

Your rights when you shop the sales
Discounts do not suspend the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). A March 2026 paper by the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) sets out the main protections for people who shop online:
- Seven-day cooling-off: under section 44 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECTA), you can cancel an online purchase within seven working days without a reason or penalty. If you have already paid, the refund is due within 30 days. Some goods are excluded.
- Bait marketing: section 30 of the CPA bars a supplier from advertising goods at a price in a way that misleads you about whether they are really available at that price.
- Checking your order: if you could not inspect goods before buying, the CPA lets you refuse delivery and claim a refund when they do not match what you ordered.
- Seller details: online sellers must show their physical address, contact details, the full price including delivery, and their returns and complaints process.
- Delivery: unless you agreed otherwise, the seller must fulfil an online order within 30 days.
Purchases that result from direct marketing, such as a sales call, also carry a five-business-day cooling-off period. If a problem is not solved with the retailer, the paper lists the CGSO (0860 000 272) for retail disputes and the NCC (012 065 1940). This is general information, not legal advice.
How to avoid Black Friday scams
Fake shops multiply ahead of the sales. In September, Capitec warned that criminals were using AI tools to build copies of well-known South African retail sites, naming Takealot, Game and Incredible Connection among the brands being imitated, Briefly News reported.
- Type the retailer's web address yourself or use its official app, rather than following links in WhatsApp messages, SMSes, emails or ads.
- Be wary of sellers who accept only real-time bank transfers or pressure you to pay quickly; Capitec lists both as red flags.
- Check the NCC's list of untraceable suppliers. On 12 May 2026 it added 20 businesses, taking the list to 113; the NCC says these suppliers took payments and failed to deliver.
- The NCC's festive-season consumer alert suggests checking a suspicious website with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service's Yima tool.
- Set a price ceiling in advance. Even Takealot's own Black November page says a deal only counts if it is on something you wanted, at a price you would have paid anyway.
What to watch for
- Through November: Makro, Game, Woolworths, Checkers and Pick n Pay are expected to publish their own Black Friday dates and catalogues.
- 23 November: Takealot's weekly Black November drops are due to end.
- 27 November, 00:00 SAST: Takealot's main Black Friday deals go live.
- 30 November: Cyber Monday. Our Cyber Monday 2026 explainer covers the global picture.
- Early December: banks usually release spending figures. TechCentral reported Capitec's 2025 numbers on 4 December last year.
Our take
Based on the announcements so far, Black Friday in South Africa is now a five-week season rather than a single day, led by online retailers. That gives shoppers time to compare prices, but it also gives scammers more time to copy real shops. The safest approach the official sources point to is simple: buy through retailers' own sites and apps, keep proof of the normal price, and remember that the seven-day online cooling-off period still applies during the sales.
